Welcome to Weekender! This week we look into an idea which has popping up in the British headlines: "core British values'.

Government ministers have announced that they may add 'British Values' to the list of compulsory lessons that secondary school students in England are taught.

But what are 'core British values'? We hear answers from a variety of people who all live in England.

You can download the programme script and an mp3 version at the bottom of this page.

As you listen, try to answer the following questions:

1. Did most people understand what is meant by 'core British values'?

2. The idea for these new lessons came about as a response to a specific event. What was that event?

And here's a task for you to complete as you listen, if you have time:

Try to make a list of all the core values you hear during the programme, e.g. 'respect'
