presenting in english

This is one of the most difficult skills - whether in your own language or in another.

There is an excellent book on the market - it's been around now for almost 20 years - and that's Mark Powell's 'Presenting in English' from Heinle (formerly LTP of Michael Lewis - more from him later).

A complaint about this book is that there's too much in the way of 'gap-filling':

Other reviewers praise it for its lively, communicative approach:

My favourite section is "Simplifying" which contains some of the most thought provoking material and without a doubt has led each one of my students into a new pattern of thinking. And it's fun.
The sections on "Rhetorical Questions" are also highly amusing as we work through the exercises and my students develop their "acting" skills - using voice and expression in new ways often turns many grammatically correct but dry, turgid presentations into something much more dynamic.
There are 40 or 50 topics - they could be worked through systematically or you can pick and mix as I do. Every unit can be extended using actual examples composed by the student from their own work experience. You will also find some of the exercises relevant and useful for training other business situations - eg meetings/negotiations/discussions.

But I'd agree with the 'blurb' from Amazon:

"Presenting in English" teaches students how to become successful presenters at conferences or meetings. The course is designed for all students who need to use their English in front of audiences of any size. The author, himself a very effective presenter, has organised all the skills, language, and techniques needed to present in public with confidence. The course includes extensive practice activities and is accompanied by two audio CDs. This course has an Answer Key and is designed to be used by students alone or in class. "Presenting in English" has several unique features which make it exceptionally practical.

NOTE: Just be careful which version you buy: The one with the British voices on the CD or the American version. Either is OK!
