In the Devon town of Ottery St. Mary, however, November 5th takes rather more vigorous shape. Each year is marked by the Tar Barrels festival: an ancient tradition pre-dating Guy Fawkes, in which men, women and children as young as 7 years old set light to wooden barrels lined with tar, and run through the streets with them. On their heads.
The Tar Barrels Festival is one of the few remaining ancient fire festivals in the UK, and the participants guard their tradition fiercely. In fact, it could be the only bonfire night event which actively tries to dissuade people from coming – and not without good reason.
